Game of the Week: Donkey Kong Country
Back in 1994, there was one game that was on most Nintendo fans must-have list, that game was Donkey Kong Country.
At the time it was the first game to support a new style and also a new updated way of giving enhanced graphics to players. Rare managed to get the game to have 2.5D graphics by making use of the hardware within the SNES and by also using custom graphics chips within the cartridges.
I remember on Christmas day 1994 not putting this game down but only to eat. My brother and I would take it in turns to complete a level. By late evening on Christmas day we managed to get to the second set of levels, a feat which would only take about 45 minutes these days for me.
At the time I remember thinking how large this game felt and also pleasantly feeling overwhelmed by this. To me it meant more of an awesome game to play. As well as Super Mario World, this game featured bonus levels, but this time they were more rewarding. Bananas (DK’s equivalent of coins) and Extra Lives were aplenty with the mini-games that were found, all of this added to the enhanced graphical experience and made it a more immersive and enjoyable game.
If you fancy a trip down memory lane this can easily be played on a PC using Snes9X.
